Q: WHY would I want to install a Universal Coin Lock on my restroom?
A: The fact that you are here says there must be a control issue. People are often reluctant to make their restrooms into PAY TOILETS. They do not wish to charge their customers to use the facility. But too often they do find it necessary to restrict WHO is using the facilities and to have some control on this. So, you needn’t think of it as a PAY TOILET but more an issue of “ACCESS CONTROL”
Consider the following points:
CONTROL How often have you gone into your restroom and found a mess left by junkies – – needles, syringes, and other things best left in the hazardous waste bin?
CONTROL How about “lurkers”? Keeping the riffraff out can be an important security issue. Unfortunately, in today’s world this can be a great concern.
Did We mention CONTROL? You can still make your facility available to your customers, but let them remain closed to outsiders.COINS TOO! In some instances, TOKENS may not be practical. In those cases, the use of a coin, usually a quarter, will at least minimize the damage of transients, and will generate some income to offset the cost of providing a restroom.
In these cases, it is reasonable to use a TOKEN operated lock. You need not charge for the token, but you do get to be face-to-face with the person using the restroom. This can be important for security reasons, or to limit access to your customers only, and restrict outsiders from using the facility.
Tokens offer a convenience in many applications. We have all been to a service station, and asked to use the facilities there. They will hand you a key chained to a tire, because they want to make sure you don’t walk off with the key. By using TOKENS, this kind of inconvenience is eliminated. Such an application is great for Service Stations, restaurants, fast food places, laundromats, bus terminals, etc.
One important issue to consider! You should check local building codes & with your local Board of Health to make certain that such devices are allowed. Some local governments have bans on the use of the devices under any circumstances. And they cannot be used on any Federal Property. Some areas had bans that have since been rescinded.
We would be happy to sell you our products, but you assume any liability for orders to have them removed if they are in violation of any codes.
Q: I have an older Universal Coin Lock. Can I get service?
A: Unfortunately, NO. A very few of the parts in the new units are interchangeable with the older one. But most parts are very different. Of course the outer housing, especially of an old chrome plated unit, is one of the most critical parts, and none of those are available at all. The locks for the pass key are also obsolete and no longer available, nor are there replacement keys available. If you have one good one, a well equipped locksmith can cut it.
Q: How do I order a Universal Coin Operated Restroom Lock?
A: You may order line at
CoinOperatedProducts.com or submit
order form by email to
sales@monarchcoin.com or by fax to 859-261-7403. The form indicates what variation of the lock you will need.
NOTE WELL! The form asks for the thickness of the door. DO NOT GUESS, you MUST measure the door to make sure the unit provided will work smoothly. Go To ORDER FORM
We ship to the information you have provided, so make certain you have covered all the points to avoid added charges.
Q: Does the Universal Coin Lock fit where the Nic-o-lok has been?
A: Our Coin Op Lock is basically the same width and is a bit longer. The inside handle comes with a plate that will cover the screw holes left by the Nic-O-Lok internal plate. If existing locks have an unusually long offset, some part of old hole may be exposed.
Q: Is the Universal Coin Lock compliant with ADA?
A: There is no one agency that approves or disapproves a product for ADA. And in the case of the Coin Operated Restroom lock there is more to compliance than the lock itself. If the lock is mounted too high or if the door is an in-swing, without sufficient turning radius for a wheel chair, then the coin op lock is not an issue, the facility itself is in non-compliance. For guidance on the overall compliance issues, consult your local building inspector.
Assuming that all other factors in the bathroom are in compliance, including your installation, then we have done our best to conform to ADA. We have recently changed the outside handle on the lock to offer greater ease of use for those with handicaps. The lock requires very little pressure to open, and the lever is easily swung just matter of few degrees to operate. In addition, our top coin entry conforms with the pertinent aspects of ADA regarding coin mechanisms. That is, the device must not require a tight pinching of the coin or token, it must not require a rotary motion (example: a bubble gum mechanism is not ADA compliance) and must not require more than 5 foot pounds of force to operate. Keep this mind when setting the tension on your door closers too! The final test lies in alternatives. If there is no better alternative, if all practical attempts have been made to comply with the appropriate regulations, then the item is in compliance.
Q: How many quarters does the Universal Coin Lock take to allow entry?
A: ONE – this mechanism and Nic-O-Loks, will only accept one coin or token to open.
Q: How does the Universal Coin Lock compare to Nic-o-lok?
A: Both units do basically the same thing. Nic-O-Lok units, without question, are excellent units, but they are only for lease, while the Universal Coin Locks are purchased outright. They are YOURS. You own it! No lease agreements and no monthly payments.
Q: Does the Universal Coin Lock have a lock out feature?
A: NO, the lock is opened with the pass key or insertion of the proper coin or token, but does not have any provision to lock it out so it does not function. The single function DOES lock out anyone wishing to enter while someone is in the facility. It is possible on one of these to open the door with a coin or token, then close the door without entering, and then reset the lock with the pass key at a later time.
Q: What about bogus coins? Will the Universal Coin Lock reject them?
A: Yes it will. You cannot just stick any type of coin or token into the device to open it. It is mechanical and specifically gauged to operate at a certain tolerance. The wrong tolerance will be rejected.
Q: How many coins does the coin box on the Universal Coin Lock hold?
A: Depending on the size of the coin or token it will hold about 110 to 120 pieces.
Q: Can the Universal Coin Locks be made to admit more than one person?
A: Yes. We have a unit that allows for “MULTI USE”. These units are optimal for areas that need to allow for more than one person to enter an area. For areas that wish to restrict entry to one person at a time, “SINGLE USE” units are the best option.
Q: Can the Universal Coin Lock be made for other than a US Quarter?
A: Yes it can. We can currently do tokens or other styles of currency depending on the size. Please call to verify if your currency or coin style will work.
Q: Does it matter which token I choose?
A: YES. If you wish to use the quarter or token option, you MUST use the .900 token. Before you choose this or any other token option, you should check around in your area to see what tokens are in use. Does the local transit system use tokens? What size? How about an arcade, car wash, or a laundromat? What tokens are they using? You will want to avoid using the same tokens so that yours do not disappear into their facility or theirs do not show up in yours.
Q: What about staff? How do they get in?
A: The coin lock has a lock in the middle of the outside handle. It comes with two pass keys. Additional keys are available for an added charge. The coin box has a different key, also furnished with two keys for collections. The units are furnished with only two of each but added keys can be obtained when putting your order through. They are a $1.00 each when ordered with the UCL, but are substantially higher if ordered separately at a later date.
The keys have numbers on them. Make a record of the number and keep it for future reference.
Q: Do I need to remove the existing knob?
A: YES. The existing knob or other latches are not used with the coin operated lock.
Q: Where do I send units for repair?
A: YOU DON’T!! YOU MUST CALL FOR A RETURN AUTHORIZATION NUMBER! AT THAT POINT YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH THE INFORMATION ON HOW TO RETURN A PRODUCT
Packages received without an RMA number will be returned to sender at your cost.
Q: How long does it take to get a Universal Coin Lock?
A: Once you have furnished the information required, production time is a matter of 2-3 working days. Shipping times vary according to your location. Units ship from Kentucky by UPS. Ground service to the west coast is about 5 working days. Nearer points will have shorter delivery times. Shipping costs average $18-$25.00 per unit. UPS RATES FLUCTUATE SO ASK FOR QUOTE IF THIS IS A CRITICAL FACTOR
Special needs may require more time!
Q: Does the unit close the door itself?
A: NO. You will have to provide your own door closer. Keep in mind the door itself must operate smoothly to allow proper operation, and the door closer must close firmly without requiring too much effort to pull or push open.
Q: How difficult is the coin/token lock to install?
A: The lock requires little more than basic handyman skills. Tools are those readily available, a drill with bits, phillips head and common screwdrivers. See General Installation Instructions for some idea of what is involved.
Q: What is the minimum order?
A: The minimum became $50.00 per order. The amount is for product only, shipping is not a part of the minimum. When ordering tokens only, the minimum order is 200 pieces of any one style.
Q: I do not see an answer to my specific question. What can I do to get an answer.
